Hiking trails & advice


In 1493 the first Europeans arrive to Guadeloupe. The Guadeloupe is then covered with forests and marshes. The men, hunters and soldiers explore the mountains of Low-Is in hiding, in search of water and of game, and create the first traces thus. A means of penetrating in a hostile environment, but with the many resources. Escaped slaves, also will take refuge in its mountains.  The traces made by these slaves in escape called neg mawon (mawon for marronnage) form integral part of the heritage and the history of Guadeloupe.

The Councils of the National park to the hiker : Provide with good shoes of excursion. The sandals, flip-flops, heels, pumps are to be proscribed. Carry a warm clothing and a rainwear. Envisage a behaviour of replacement in a plastic bag. Time is very changing into Guadeloupe. Supervise the weather and are wary of the rainy weather. Most excursions comprise crossings of rivers which can know violent and sudden risings. In Antlles the night fall early: 17:30 in December. 19:00 in June. Never begin an excursion after 13:30. Never leave only: always warn somebody of your route and duration of your absence. Do not go the empty belly. Envisage food rich in energy values. Carry water in sufficient quantity. One to two liters per anybody for very left higher than 2 hours. Do not over-estimate your forces. Choose your routes according to your physical condition. In Guadeloupe, most traces are “sporting” paths booked to the good walkers. Hunting, the fishing season, the gathering and any taking away in the National park are strictly prohibited. Carbets and picnic area  : picnic in forest is in Guadeloupe a well anchored tradition. Since always, vacancies and bank holidays are the occasion to spend the day in nature,  at the edge of the rivers, to lunch in family and between friends. Formerly one was installed on rocks or covers between the roots of the trees. Today, carbets especially arranged and maintained equipment offers better conditions of comfort and security, appreciated by all, particularly when it rains. These installations are the good of all. As the mileu which surrounds them they must be respected:  Endeavour to maintain the carbets in the best state of cleanliness. Do not leave any refuse always likely to attract the wandering rats and dogs. Carry your waste with you. Do not make fire apart from the places envisaged for this purpose. Will know that to make fire at the bottom of a tree with the very ground, in addition to the risk to damage the trunk seriously, causes to destroy the ground and to make it durably sterile. Do not wash anything in water, deterging them cause extensive damages, because, just as they wash the Dishes and the skin, they wash the rocks where develop the aquatic life.

 


 

The paths : paths are maintained by the National park.  Below, some photos. It is better to  not to have a walk in flip-flops. Prefer good walking shoes...
